Parathyroid Carcinoma
December 10, 2003 | Parathyroid & Calcium
The severe life-threatenting hypercalcemia caused by a parathyroid carcinoma can be treated with a calcimimetic agent. This binds to the parathyroid cancer'scalcium-sensing receptor and fools it into reducing its production of parathyroid hormonee. One such agent is R586; 100 to 600 mg/day has been reported to be effective. Other medical treatments for the severe hypercalcemia of parathyroid carcinoma include bisphosphonates and mithramycin.
