St. John's Wort

St. John's Wort is commonly taken as an herbal antidepressant. However, it can have significant side-effects. It can react adversely with prescription drugs. For example, St. John's Wort lowers coumadin, cyclosporine,indinivir, digoxin,and tricyclic (antidepressant) levels in patients taking those drugs. St John's Wort increases serum levels of SSRI antidepressants (eg, Prozec, Celexa, Zoloft) and Serzone. A patient who added St John's Wort to Paxil became incoherent. There have been a reports of brain hemorrhage in patients taking St John's Wort and Vitamin E together.
