Practice Description

Paul A. Fitzgerald, M.D.

I have been a physician for over 30 years. For more than 25 of those years, I have been at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), first as a fellow in endocrinology & metabolism and now as a Clinical Professor of Medicine. I am a member of UCSF’s Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes Center. I have a private practice at UCSF, specializing in endocrinology & metabolism and internal medicine.

UCSF is regularly ranked as one of the top 10 medical centers in the USA, in both research and patient care. My UCSF colleagues include numerous nationally renowned physicians and researchers, who can provide my patients with top subspecialty care.

My colleagues and I have collaborated on medical publications (see curriculum vitae). I also contribute the "Endocrine Disorders" chapter for Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment (CMDT), and write chapters for Basic & Clinical Pharmacology and for Basic and Clinical Endocrinology; each is the world’s top-selling textbook in its field. I’ve also edited two editions of my own textbook, Handbook of Clinical Endocrinology.

Handbook of Clinical Endocrinology

UCSF physicians are engaged in exciting clinical research. Examples: We are treating patients with malignant pheochromocytoma (a rare adrenal tumor) with an isotope called 131I-MIBG. Our Diabetes Center is dedicated to cure diabetes and has an islet cell transplantation program.

How I Practice Medicine

I have a private office at UCSF Medical Center, overlooking Golden Gate Park, the Golden Gate Bridge, and our spectacular City By The Bay. I have a kind and competent office manager, and I share my office with a great general internist.

Most people desire a personal physician who knows them well and who really cares for them. I want to be that kind of personal physician. Therefore, I spend considerable time with each patient. Because I practice medicine in this manner, I can't afford to be a "participating physician" in any medical insurance plans. I see private patients only.

I enjoy a friendly and collegial relationship with my patients, based upon candor, mutual respect and trust. I believe in preventive medicine and want my patients to be knowledgeable and responsible about their health.
